Overview

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, FCE OBUDU

            The Department of Chemistry was created out of the department of Integrated Science in 1999 and was charged with the responsibility of training students for the award of National Certificate in Education (N.C.E) in Chemistry/Integrated Science and Chemistry/Computer Science combinations. The department started with four (4) academic staff and two (2) non-academic staff headed by Mr. Ephraim Okon-Enoh with a population of eleven students. However, the department has grown to a students’ population of about 160 students across NCE 1-3. The staff strength has also increased to thirteen (13), seven academic staff and six non-academic staff. In addition, the department currently trains students for the award of Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Chemistry/Integrated Science, Chemistry/Computer Science, Chemistry/Biology, Chemistry/Mathematics, Chemistry/Physics, Chemistry/Physical and Health Education combinations.

            Also with the commencement of the degree programme in the College in affiliation with the University of Calabar, Calabar in 2011, the department is training degree students for the award of Bachelor degrees in Education thus: Educational Administration, Educational Technology, Guidance and Counselling with Chemistry as a teaching subject. However, the department is looking forward to the full accreditation for the award of Bachelor of Science Education (B.Sc. Ed) in Chemistry. The department is currently headed by Mr. Iwu Okechukwu.
